We tested Grammarly on various texts and used it in our everyday writing to see how useful it is. The software easily catches comma errors, which are among the most frequent mistakes in writing. It also does a better job than Microsoft Word in finding and fixing errors, which makes it a worthwhile investment if you care about the quality of your writing.

You can then go through the document and correct the errors. If you’re not sure why Grammarly suggests a change, the system gives you a brief explanation. These are useful for someone who knows grammar and punctuation well, but they’re not really teaching tools. They work more like reminders, and they assume that you have a good command of written English.

With Grammarly, it’s better to wait until you finish writing before you check for errors. Even though it’s the best tool for checking your work as you go, it’s not very fast at recognizing when you fix typos yourself. You’ll want to click through the review rather than try to edit within the text box or digital document. It can also be distracting to be corrected while you write, as you might lose your focus or forget what you’re writing.

Grammarly lets you choose American or British English, and you can pick a writing genre. This is very helpful because you use different styles when writing for different audiences, and it’s great that Grammarly can adapt to different types of projects.

The application also makes it easy to ignore its advice, which is especially useful if the software gets something wrong in your document, which happens sometimes. In addition, you can add words to your dictionary. We found this feature helpful when we used uncommon terms meant for an internal audience.

Many of the other programs we reviewed made it hard to identify the problem text, but Grammarly’s red underlining is easy to see and clearly marks where the error is.
